AP 2-D ART & DESIGN
Sustained Investigation
In this portfolio, I explored the question: How can I show different kinds of locations by simplifying them down to simple shapes, color, and space? Throughout this exploration I found myself inspired by the variety of architecture in San Francisco.
10TH AVENUE
4.125" x 5.75" | cardstock
The idea behind this piece was to depict the house as a "memory". I included many of the most distinct or interesting characteristics and rearranged them to convey the idea that I could recognize this house if I saw it, but describing it in detail would be much more difficult.

SOLVANG
4.125" x 5.75" | cardstock
A while back, I made an illustrated postcard based on a photo I took in Solvang. In this artwork, I wanted to try a more abstract approach by taking the interesting shapes from the buildings and rearranging them.

COLORFUL HOUSES
4.125" x 5.75" | cardstock
The subject of this artwork is Victorian houses from San Francisco. I was really inspired by how colorful and detailed they were. In addition to using the distinct characteristics, I explored showing multiple buildings at once by separating them through color.

LITTLE ITALY POSTCARD
4.1" x 5.8" | Adobe Illustrator
Little Italy is a neighborhood in San Francisco that has very interesting and detailed buildings. After developing a way to turn these kinds of characteristics into a design, I wanted to really lean into adding typography and make my designs look like real postcards.

VESUVIO CAFE POSTCARD
5.75" x 4.125" | cardstock
In this postcard design, I continued to work on adding typography. This time I focused on keeping it within the main composition.

TALL BUILDINGS
4.125" x 5.75" | cardstock
Another part of architecture that I found interesting to work with was the high rise office buildings. Since they are very uniform and have a lot of repetition, I decided to push the negative space.

BIG CITY
5.75" x 4.125" | cardstock
I can always convey size through contrast, but I wanted to find another way. In this artwork, I experimented with perspective instead.

PASTEL ALLEY POSTCARD
5.8" x 4.1" | Adobe Illustrator
For my final design in this portfolio, I found myself wanting to showcase so many different aspects of Pastel Alley. I used my structured approach to integrate typography and create the perspective of looking down an alley. Then I applied some of the characteristics like color and texture to the individual letters.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
There were only so many artworks that I could include in my final portfolio,
but these are some of the early pieces I made that helped me to refine my focus.
